The new “Yellowstone” series centered on Kayce Dutton has been greenlit at CBS, Variety has learned.
The project was first reported to be in the works at the network in March. CBS has given the show a 13-episode order, with plans to begin shooting this summer to launch at midseason 2026 on Sunday nights. The news was revealed along with CBS’ fall schedule for the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
Luke Grimes will once again play Kayce, the youngest of the Dutton siblings and a former Navy SEAL. When fans last saw the character, he had retained a small part of the Yellowstone Dutton ranch for his family after selling off the majority to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation.
The new show is currently titled “Y: Marshals.” Per the official logline, “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Spencer Hudnut is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on “Y: Marshals.” “Yellowstone” mastermind Taylor Sheridan will executive produce along with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari of 101 Studios. Grimes will executive produce in addition to starring, with “Yellowstone” EP Art Linson also executive producing. The show is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, as are all shows in the “Yellowstone” universe.
Speaking with reporters ahead of the schedule reveal, CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach addressed how the show landed at CBS as opposed to Paramount+ like other “Yellowstone” shows.
“I think all of our shows right now are both streaming and linear,” Reisenbach said. “That’s what we’re focused on, is trying to make our shows work on both platforms. It certainly did occur to us that the show will do really well on streaming, because all the Taylor shows have. But ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Tulsa King’ also did really well for us when we aired them on the network. So, in terms of Taylor’s involvement, we’re still early in the process. He’s a very busy guy, but we’ll take what we can get.”
Grimes originated the role of Kayce Dutton in the first season of “Yellowstone,” starring in the hit neo-Western throughout its run at Paramount Network. He has also starred in films like “American Sniper” and the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise. He is repped by CAA, Range Media Partners, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
Hudnut was most recently the showrunner on the final two seasons of the CBS/Paramount+ show “SEAL Team.” His other credits include “The Blacklist: Redemption” and “Unforgettable.” He is repped by CAA and TFC.
This is the latest offshoot of “Yellowstone,” which wrapped up after five seasons earlier this year. Sheridan has already released the prequels “1883” and “1923,” the latter of which just aired its series finale. The next prequel, “1944,” is currently in the works. Up next in the Dutton-verse is the sister series “The Madison” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, while a spinoff centered on Beth and Rip is also on the way.
This marks the latest series pickup at CBS of late. They have already greenlit shows like the “Blue Bloods” spinoff “Boston Blue” as well as the “Fire Country” spinoff “Sheriff Country” on deck for the 2025-2026 broadcast season. The new entry in the “FBI” franchise, “CIA” starring Tom Ellis, was also recently ordered to series.
