BLACKFOOT – A woman and her child escaped a vehicle fire between Idaho Falls and Blackfoot Sunday afternoon.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. at milepost 101 near the rest area, according to Corporal Van Orden with the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Van Orden tells EastIdahoNews.com the 38-year-old from Wyoming heard something pop and pulled over. The vehicle burst into flames and she and her child got out safely. They were not hurt.
Firefighters with the Shelley-Firth Fire District responded and quickly put out the blaze. It’s not clear what caused it.
Traffic was reduced to one lane of travel during the ordeal, which lasted about an hour. Van Orden says there was a separate, minor crash involving two vehicles as a result of the sudden slowdown in traffic.
The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to be safe and aware of their surroundings when traffic is at a standstill.
