The Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced the new PhD policy on Wednesday.
According to HEC Chairman Tariq Banuri, one can now apply for a PhD after 16 years of study as the requirement for MS and MPhil before PhD has now been abolished. The new policy will take effect on January 1, 2021.
The new policy will not be fully applicable to PhD students already enrolled in universities, however, alumni may benefit from some parts of the policy.
Furthermore, for the first time in Pakistan’s history, this policy has eliminated the need for doctoral students to pursue a PhD in their discipline.
The doors of M.Phil for PhD students are closed, however, MS / M.Phil degrees can be obtained on the basis of required qualifications.
PhD students have also been barred from leaving their homeland for at least two years.
According to the notification, the need to send PhD dissertations to foreign experts for review will also be removed and students will now be allowed to send Pakistani experts for review.
