IDAHO FALLS — Two people were arrested Saturday morning after a man reportedly punched a deputy.
Jordan Pence, 25, is charged with felony battery on a peace officer, misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers, and misdemeanor concealed carrying a weapon while under the influence.
Mikayla Hill, 27, is charged with misdemeanor driving without privileges and misdemeanor second DUI.
According to a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a car being driven by Hill near Lindsay Boulevard and US Highway 20 just before 2 a.m. after deputies say they observed “signs of intoxication.”
During the stop, a passenger in the vehicle, Pence, reportedly “began to get aggressive with deputies.”
Deputies were investigating Hill for a potential DUI, when Pence reportedly got out of the car and tried to open the trunk, despite commands from deputies to stay in the passenger seat.
Pence allegedly “slammed the trunk lid and got face to face with a deputy yelling obscenities,” according to the news release.
As the deputy was pushing him back, Pence reportedly shoved the deputy and punched him in the face.
Deputies were able to gain control of Pence, securing him in handcuffs after he continued trying to fight on the ground. During this, a handgun allegedly fell out of a waistband holster underneath Pence’s clothes. Deputies secured the firearm, reportedly finding it loaded with ammunition.
Deputies say Pence complained of injuries during the struggle, and was taken to the hospital for a medical clearance before being transported to the Bonneville County Jail.
Deputies continued the DUI investigation with Ms. Hill, who reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol earlier that evening.
Breath testing results from Hill reportedly indicated a BAC of .12, over the legal limit of .08. She was placed under arrest and transported to the Bonneville County Jail.
The injured deputy was taken to the hospital and treated for a contusion injury to the face before being released.
Pence is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing on May 16. If convicted, he could face up to 26 and a half years in prison.
Further court hearings have not been scheduled for Hill. If convicted, she could face up to one year in prison.
Though Pence and Hill have been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
