Bayern Munich dominated Inter Milan in the first leg of this Champions League tie but somehow ended up losing 2-1. Lots of talking points about this match.
Individual mistakes cost the team
Bayern were all over Inter and the main reason why they didn’t get anything from 3.18 xG is down to certain players messing up repeatedly throughout the match. Harry Kane had a night to forget as he missed a couple of big chances, while Sacha Boey and Leon Goretzka misjudged an Inter attack near the end to let them get three points. Eric Dier also made an error in his positioning which allowed Inter to score that late goal. Conversely, Michael Olise is easily the best attacker the Bavarians had on the pitch. Of course, who could I forget…
Thomas Müller is indomitable
Despite the efforts made by the club to take him down, Müller has come in clutch to give Bayern and its fans a moment of pure ecstasy (albeit briefly). All this chatter about him not delivering on the biggest stage has just been disproved in this match. Before then, the 35-year-old could have had a goal or two to his name. He HAS to start against Borussia Dortmund and in the return leg in Milan, full stop.
Vincent Kompany must stop with the experimentation
For the praise Kompany gets, some of his decisions simply do not help the team at all. Leaving Müller on the bench and playing Raphaël Guerreiro in his position, choosing Goretzka over João Palhinha (objectively speaking), and the Boey substitution all hurt the team. If Bayern wants to win the final of the Champions League at home, then Kompany should start doing things properly.
