PESHAWAR: Traders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have demanded removal of barriers to boost trade between Pakistan and regional countries.
Sherbaz Bilour, President, Sarmad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), while presiding over a meeting of traders, importers and exporters at the chamber, said, “Strengthening the local economy, bringing prosperity and boosting the country’s exports. The meeting was attended by Senior Vice President Engineer Manzoor Elahi and Vice President of the Chamber Junaid Altaf and others. Participants identified barriers to Pak-Afghan trade as well as the Central Asian Republic (CAR) and put forward a number of suggestions for a friendly resolution.
It was agreed that the proposed recommendations would be forwarded to the concerned authorities and institutions as well as to the diplomatic missions of the car countries to address the impediment to bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan and the regional countries.
Bilour urged Pakistan and Kabul to review policies to ensure smooth trade between the two neighboring countries. He said that the business community, especially exporters and importers, faced immense difficulties in doing business with Afghanistan and other regional countries. He stressed on their resolution on priority basis.
The SCCI President said that if all obstacles were removed, the volume of Pak-Afghan bilateral trade could be increased by transit trade through Afghanistan to regional states. He appreciated the reduction in the ratio of tariffs, duties and taxes on some imports and exports by both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
