Teen driver leads high-speed chase, crashes into canal in Idaho Falls

A high-speed chase involving a 13-year-old driver ended dramatically early Wednesday morning when the vehicle crashed into a canal. Bonneville County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with the Ucon Police Department and Idaho State Police, responded to the incident that began around 1 a.m. near Highway 26 and Ammon Road.

The pursuit started when officers attempted to stop a pickup truck traveling at a high speed with only one working headlight. The vehicle ran a red light at Highway 26 and continued south on Ammon Road, eventually speeding through a construction zone and driving through residential yards.

A deputy attempted a traffic stop near 25th E. and Iona Road but discontinued the pursuit as the vehicle continued at a high speed. The pickup, now without headlights, was later found parked in a nearby apartment complex. The driver rammed into patrol cars and damaged property while trying to escape.

The chase resumed as the suspect drove north on Ammon Road, reaching speeds over 100 mph and ignoring traffic signals. The pursuit ended when the driver failed to make a turn onto Roh Lane and drove into a canal.

Authorities took the 13-year-old female driver into custody. She faces two felony counts of aggravated battery, felony eluding, and misdemeanor charges for leaving the scene of an accident and joyriding. A 15-year-old male passenger was released to his parents, with potential charges related to the theft of the pickup pending.
