In the first season, an original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.

Season 2 of Shōgun is set ten years after the events of the first and will continue the history-inspired saga of two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.

As part of the big reveal released on Wednesday at the Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific Disney+ Originals Preview in Hong Kong, the writing and directing teams were also confirmed.

The Season 2 writing staff consists of Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff. Season 1 returning directors include Hiromi Kamata (Episode 6, “Ladies of the Willow World”) and Takeshi Fukunaga (Episode 7, “A Stick of Time”), who will be joined by new additions Anthony Byrne (Say Nothing), Kate Herron (Loki), and Marks from the writing team.

Shōgun was the darling of the 2024 Emmy Awards season, winning a record-breaking 18 statuettes from the 25 categories it was nominated for. They broke the record for the most Emmys won by a series in one season. The show also made history in the actor and actress categories for a drama series, with Sanada becoming the first Japanese actor to win the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Anna Sawai as the first actress of Asian descent to win Lead Actress in the same category.
