There was music in Joe Biden’s opening program – in particular, the music of the New Radicals.
On the opening day, the beloved alternative rock band met for the first time since the 1999 breakup of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s virtual “Parade Across America.” The band performed their hit song “You Get What You Gave”, which has a deep personal connection to the Biden family: it served as an inspirational anthem while the president’s son Beau Biden battled brain cancer. Who finally took his life in 2015.
President Biden wrote in his 2017 autobiography, “During breakfast, the wife often forced me to listen to what I thought was her theme song, in which you sang the song New Radicals.” What have you got? Promise me father. “Even though the wife never fought and her desire to live was strongest – I think she knew today could come. The lyrics are: ‘This whole world can be broken.’ You’ll be fine, your heart will follow. ‘”
The song was also a walk-on music for Harris’ husband, Doug Amp, during the 2020 election campaign.
Lead singer of the new Radicals Greg Alexander (who wore the same hat as he did in the music video for this song) dedicated his performance to Beau Biden and the new administration, in a pre-taped introduction, “When We “What you got when you got it was a Biden anthem. We promised that if he won, we would play our little songs together, both in memory and in our new ones,” he said. In memory of the President’s patriotic son Beau and with the prayers of Joe, we are able to reunite our country. “
The band changed the song slightly for their performances, removing Beck, Hansen, Courtney Mohabbat and Marilyn Manson from the controversial rap bridge. (The lyrics of this moment “Health Insurance, Lying” were probably not ideal for this program.)
“For the opening and just four minutes to play, I couldn’t go to the rap section anyway,” Alexander said. rolling Stone.
