If the Packers used a Week 1 domination of the Lions as a major statement, they’ve backed it up and then some through one half of Week 2. The Packers lead the Commanders 14-3 through 30 minutes, with a lockdown defense aided by an explosive offense.
The game got off to a bit of a slow start, with a methodical Packers drive ending when Trey Amos broke up an under-thrown Jordan Love deep ball on fourth down, only for the Packers’ defense to force a quick three-and-out.
But the Green Bay offense got rolling on the next drive. Backed up near his own end zone, Love found Tucker Kraft to get some breathing room and then hit his tight end again on a 57-yard completion when Kraft broke free down the middle against a busted coverage. Love would go on to convert a third-and-9 with his legs shortly thereafter and then find Romeo Doubs for a 5-yard touchdown on the ensuing play.
The Commanders continued to find it tough sledding against Green Bay’s talented defense. They only managed one first down through three drives and none in the first quarter, a first since Daniels’ arrival.
Green Bay embarked on another long drive early in the second quarter, aided by a remarkable, twisting 37-yard catch from Malik Heath.
Doubs and Kraft came up with more chunk plays, and Josh Jacobs powered in from 2 yards out to make it 14-0. Commanders defensive lineman Deatrich Wise Jr. got carted off after trying to block the extra point, adding to Washington’s woes.
Washington finally got on the board with a 51-yard Matt Gay field goal, but Gay missed a 58-yarder that could have cut the deficit further just before the half. That allowed the Packers to move into field goal range, but Brandon McManus missed a 48-yarder as time expired.
