According to PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar, Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has passed away in London.
The development was confirmed by senior PML-N leader Ataullah Tarar, who announced the sad news on Twitter. Begum Shamim Akhtar was 90 years old.
“Honorable mother of Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif has passed away,” he tweeted.
PML-N sources said that Begum Shamim Akhtar was ill for a long time and was being treated in London.
According to party sources, she died this morning at Avonfield Apartments where she was staying with Nawaz Sharif.
Begum Shamim Akhtar had been ill since last week and her condition had deteriorated due to old age.
Talking to Geo News, Ataullah Tarar said that he spoke to Suleiman Shahbaz on the phone who confirmed the death of his grandmother and said that arrangements were being made to bring him to Pakistan for burial.
He said that PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz had received information about the death of Begum Shamim Akhtar. Tarar said an application would be submitted to the court to allow Shahbaz and Hamza Shahbaz to be released on payroll so that they could attend the funeral.
