Yangon: Myanmar’s junta has accused a Japanese journalist under the “fake news” law, a report said on Tuesday, adding that the military had dealt the latest blow to press freedom since taking power.
Freelance reporter Yuki Katazumi was arrested last month and charged with spreading fake news on Monday – World Press Freedom Day, according to a Kyodo News Agency report. He is currently one of 50 journalists imprisoned in Myanmar as part of a crackdown on mass protests against the February 1 uprising.
The country has been in turmoil since the ouster of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s government, killing more than 750 people as security forces struggled to stop daily protests against their rule.
