There has been some growing concern lately that Mortal Kombat 1 is done getting new content, and now we have official word on the matter.
NetherRealm Studios just released a statement regarding the future of Mortal Kombat 1 and the developers.
“We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on,” reads the statement.
“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
So there we have it in writing. Mortal Kombat 1 is getting no more content updates, but the game will live on through balance patches, so it won’t be completely abandoned.
This news comes after the Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition package was announced and released this month, which sparked worries that the game was considered complete β and we now know that it is.
Although series co-creator Ed Boon claimed that Mortal Kombat 1 would be supported for years to come, the game didn’t even last two.
It appears Warner Bros. has decided to pull the plug on whatever the developers had planned for the future that we’ll probably now never get to see.
“That’s kind of the way we’re doing our games now,” said Boon. “So we were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, and this is year two.”
Mortal Kombat 1 first released on September 14, 2023, so with the T-1000’s release earlier this year, the game had around just a year and a half of support.
This puts the game at around the same timeline and amount of content as Mortal Kombat 11, which also seemingly got its life cut short.
Now, NetherRealm is moving on to whatever their next project may be whether it is Injustice 3, another Mortal Kombat or something else entirely though it’ll likely be a year or two before we learn what they’re cooking up in Chicago now.
Rumors began to swirl late last year that Kombat Pack 3 was planned for MK1 but then subsequently canceled, which is looking more likely than ever now.
This was allegedly a result of the Khaos Reigns expansion’s sales performance and reception not meeting expectations for WB.
The rumored characters included Cassie Cage, Jade, Kung Jin, Sonya and Kano plus one more guest, and we even got to see an apparent incomplete render of Kung Jin for MK1 as well.
Whatever the future holds for NetherRealm Studios remains to be seen, but Mortal Kombat 1’s chapter is coming to a close unfortunately earlier than expected.
We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.
