It’s been over 13 years since the release of Street Fighter X Tekken. Evo 2025 has come and gone with no surprise reveal for Tekken X Street Fighter — not that anybody was expecting such an announcement anyhow.
However, it would seem that Destructoid had the opportunity to speak with Bandai Namco’s Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray at Evo 2025. While this conversation mostly centered around the possibilities surrounding Tekken Tag Tournament 3, there was a brief mention of Tekken X Street Fighter.
“It’s hard to say if that’s even a thing. I mean, it depends on what people are wanting as well,” responded Harada through Murray who acted as a translator.
“That said, I would like to show people what we already have. That would be cool if we could do that. We were 30 percent into development, so fingers crossed.” — Katsuhiro Harada
“That said, I would like to show people what we already have. That would be cool if we could do that. We were 30 percent into development, so fingers crossed.”
Last we heard about Tekken X Street Fighter’s development, Harada declared that the project had essentially been discontinued. By that point, Tekken X Street Fighter was about 30% done.
Harada brought mention to this back in 2021. In other words, there’s been absolutely no progress on Tekken X Street Fighter over the course of the last four years, though this isn’t especially surprising.
However, Harada has been very careful with his wording. He’s outright stated before that Tekken X Street Fighter has not been canceled despite previously saying that the project had “died” at one point.
“For now, we are just waiting for the right opportunity.” — Katsuhiro Harada
Ultimately, there was a misunderstanding due to a translation error. It would seem that Harada is still holding on to hope that Tekken X Street Fighter could someday become a reality.
“So, ‘up to 30% of the development was in progress, but now it is still pending.’ This is still the status of the project,” said Harada back then on the matter.
“We are still hopeful that Tekken X Street Fighter will resume development when the opportunity arises. However, such a title cannot be moved just for the convenience of one company in terms of marketing and branding, and it also affects each other’s development resources.
“For now, we are just waiting for the right opportunity.”
While the collaboration between Bandai Namco and Capcom never resulted in Tekken X Street Fighter, we did eventually get Akuma as a guest character in Tekken 7.
In terms of Tekken X Street Fighter, we’ve seen screenshots featuring early builds of Street Fighter’s Ryu before, though he was reusing assets from Tekken characters at that point.
Based on what was said to Destructoid, it sounds like Harada would like to show fans what they have for Tekken X Street Fighter, but this would seemingly require permission from multiple parties for this to happen.
Tekken X Street Fighter technically hasn’t been canceled yet, but we continue to hear how nothing is progressing with the project. For now, the timing clearly just isn’t right. Perhaps we’ll see a revival to Tekken X Street Fighter someday, but it’ll likely still be a few years at the very least before we receive word of that actually happening.
