KARACHI: Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar has said that Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to ensure progress on development projects in Karachi and the people are getting real development in the city.
The Federal Minister made the remarks on Saturday when he along with Sindh Governor Imran Ismail inaugurated grade development works on Nomish Underpass as part of the Green Line section of the Bus Rapid Transit Service (BRTS) corridor. What
Omar said the Green Line BRTS would be operational in Karachi by the middle of next year. He said that Rs. 65 billion was given to the needy people of Sindh under Ehsan program.
He said that the Prime Minister would review the ongoing federally funded development projects including Karachi in the coming weeks. Asad Umar said that five mega development projects in Karachi are mainly the responsibility of the federal government and work is in full swing to implement them. He said that apart from BRTS, another federal government’s plan was to rehabilitate and desalinate storm water drains in the city so that Karachi would not experience the last monsoon rains.
Omar said the Sindh government has to remove encroachments around storm water drains and provide alternative housing, and the center will provide financial support to carry out this work.
He said that talks were underway with the Sindh government for the development of two islands off the coast of Karachi. He said, “The federation will not run away with these islands. He said that any development taking place there would create employment opportunities and revenue for the people of Sindh.”
