The owners of Canoli, a restaurant in Islamabad through Cafe Civil, have responded to calls for a boycott of the haunted house, saying they are “deeply saddened” by the response to the video.
The video shows the owners mocking the restaurant manager for his lack of English language skills, which Twitter users have condemned.
A statement from the owners on Instagram read, “We are saddened and shocked by the reaction of the people, how they misrepresented our banner with the team member.”
The owners described their conversation in the video as “gossip” between a team, saying it was never intended to be “painful”.
“We apologize if anyone is hurt or angry, but that was never our intention,” he said.
The statement added that employers do not have to prove anything or defend themselves as kind employers.
“Our team has been with us for a decade, it should speak for itself.”
“We are proud that Pakistanis love their language and their culture,” the owners added.
