In 2020, Pakistan Railways’ deficit increased by Rs 11 billion – from Rs 35 billion to Rs 46 billion. Geo News Reported on Wednesday, citing an annual report.
The report revealed that the railways have fewer employees and more former workers who are now pensioners. According to the report, the number of employees has dropped to 67,627.
Railways has to pay a total of Rs 31.42 billion to pensioners and another Rs 28.21 billion for its employees.
The number of railway locomotives, passenger coaches and freight coaches has also declined, the report said.
According to the report, the number of locomotives has come down from 478 to 472, while the number of coaches has come down from 1,460 to 1,378.
The report further said that the number of freight vehicles has come down from 16,159 to 14,327.
Meanwhile, on a positive note, the number of railway stations and passengers increased during the year 2020.
In a meeting with Sindh Governor Imran Ismail in Islamabad today, Federal Minister for Railways Azam Khan Swati said that steps were being taken to rehabilitate the railways.
On this occasion, steps to modernize the Karachi Circular Railway were reviewed, Radio Pakistan reported.
