New York City: The shocking announcement of the divorce of billionaire philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates 27 years after their marriage has raised questions about the future of their highly influential charity.
Here, AFP takes a look at the Gates Foundation, how it works and what projects it finances, its effects on the epidemic and how it can be nonprofit.
The couple says the idea for the foundation came to them as young parents when they read a newspaper article about millions of children in developing countries dying from easily treatable diseases such as diarrhea and pneumonia.
In 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was launched to fight disease and poverty around the world. In the United States, the initial focus on providing access to computers and the Internet has generally shifted to improving education.
With 1,600 staff members in offices around the world, the Gates Foundation contributes approximately ڈالر 5 billion annually to areas such as global public health and development. The foundation says it has spent .8 54.8 billion since its inception.
“More than 2 billion people are fighting malaria alone to eradicate mosquito-borne diseases within a generation.” The charity has contributed billions of dollars to the global campaign to eradicate polio through widespread immunization of children. It donated more than $ 50 million during the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
Dozens of other funding programs include nutrition, hygiene, maternal and newborn health and agricultural development. Last year, the foundation pledged nearly 250 250 million to help fight the epidemic, some of which was earmarked for distribution in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
The money also went to testing, personal protective equipment and support for underprivileged health services, especially in developing countries. It also played a key role in developing a global program called Caucasus to help deliver vaccines to the poorest countries. Overall, the foundation says it has spent about 1. 1.75 billion fighting the Cove 19 since the onset of the epidemic.
