Living comfortably in Texas now takes more income than it did just a year ago, according to a new report from SmartAsset.
The report found the average single adult in Texas now needs to earn $90,771 per year before taxes to live comfortably in 2025. For a family of four, that number jumps to $204,922.
Those figures represent an increase of nearly $6,000 for individuals and $9,360 for families compared to last year.
Texas ranks 31st in the nation for income needed by single adults and 40th for families of four, meaning it’s still more affordable than some states, but the gap is closing fast.
The analysis uses the popular 50/30/20 budget rule, which suggests spending 50% of income on needs (like housing and food), 30% on wants (like dining out or travel), and 20% on savings or debt repayment.
With inflation continuing to impact everyday costs, experts say families will need to adjust their budgets and look for ways to increase income just to maintain a comfortable, sustainable lifestyle in Texas.
