Grimes is no stranger to body modification and is covered with ink, but she recently made a big move – tattooing her face. And while everyone is entitled to do whatever they want to their body, that does not mean it comes without negative feedback when you share it with the internet.
On Wednesday, the singer debuted the new face ink, and her followers and haters were not shy when it came to leaving their thoughts and feelings on the matter. The singer, who has previously shown off alien scar tattoos, revealed a subtle circular tattoo around her left eye. It’s delicate, almost scar-like, and so understated that, according to her, nobody even noticed – not even her parents.
In her caption, she wrote that she had “spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo,” only to realize, “I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents.”
She praised the artist, @glyphomancer, saying their face tattoo work feels “truly novel and innovative,” adding that she believed tattoo culture is currently in a “crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under-appreciated atm.”
But while Grimes was feeling herself, the internet had other thoughts, comparing it to a fungal infection. The comments were brutal, ranging from “Is the tattoo in the room with us?” to “You tattooed ringworm on your face?” and “I remember my first ringworm.” Someone even asked, “What’s ur favorite pasta noodle shape?”
Amid the sea of haters, there were some positive responses like, “everyone’s so mean I like it,” and “It looks so great on youuu.” Plus, over 150k people showed some love by liking it.
Grimes has always been open about her desire to visually transform herself. In June 2023, she posted a photo of her leg tattoos and wrote, “Changed my body from the way God made it, it reflects my altered mind.”
She’s been talking about wanting a face tattoo for years, too. In 2022, she shared a selfie, writing in the caption, “I am very seriously considering getting a white ink tattoo on my face next week.”
Whether people find the eye tattoo beautiful, fungal, or invisible, all that matters is that Grimes is happy. As for what she might get next, she’s always wanted to get surgically implanted elf ears, which her ex, Elon Musk, was against, and has expressed a desire for vampire teeth.
