NEW YORK — Earlier this week, Griffin Canning was too sick to pitch. By Thursday evening, he was back to being the best version of himself.
Canning delivered a quality start in the Mets’ 4-1 victory over the Cardinals, rebounding from illness to hold St. Louis to one run over six innings at Citi Field. In terms of Game Score, it was the second-best outing by a Mets starter this season, behind only Kodai Senga’s seven-inning gem in West Sacramento last weekend.
A bit shaky early, Canning walked two batters in the first inning and cracked for a run in the third on Brendan Donovan’s RBI hit. But he was untouchable after that. Following Alec Burleson’s leadoff single in the fourth inning, Canning retired the final nine batters he faced.
Mark Vientos led off the second with a home run for the Mets, who wound up scoring four times in the inning. It was all the offense Canning would need.
