After leaving Game 3 of the World Series clutching his lower right side, George Springer seemed like a long shot to be a factor for the Toronto Blue Jays for the rest of the series. But as he’s done all season, Springer is playing through the pain, returning to the top of the lineup for the Blue Jays for Game 6.
As he did for the first three games of the series, Springer will bat leadoff and serve as the DH in Game 6. That pushes Bo Bichette, who is dealing with injury himself, back into the field after he stepped into the DH role in games 4 and 5. Bichette will play second base and bat cleanup for the Blue Jays, who are faced with the task of trying to solve Los Angeles Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who threw a complete game in the Dodgers’ Game 2 win.

Springer’s return is significant for Toronto. He was a key force at the top of the Blue Jays’ lineup all season, batting .309/.399/.560 with 32 home runs in 140 games. His 4.8 bWAR led the Blue Jays and was his best output since 2019, when he was with the Houston Astros. Springer has played through injuries throughout the postseason, dealing with knee and wrist ailments in addition to the side injury. Despite that, he’s homered four times in 14 games, including the game-winning homer in Game 7 of the ALCS.
