LAHORE: Funeral prayers of Begum Shamim Akhtar, mother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif were offered in Lahore today.
Mufti Raqim Naeemi led the prayers at Sharif Medical City Raiwind where a large number of PML-N leaders and workers were present. She will be buried with her husband Mian Muhammad Sharif in Jati Umrah.
The body of late Begum Akhtar has been flown to Pakistan from London on British Airways flight BA059.
Geo News reported on Saturday morning that his body had reached Lahore and was handed over to his son Shahbaz, who was at the Lahore airport with his son Hamza Shahbaz to receive the body.
PML-N spokesperson Maryam Aurangzeb and PML-N’s Ataullah Tarar were also present at Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Several PML-N workers took a flight to London carrying Begum Akhtar’s body and left for the airport as soon as it reached Lahore.
PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif offered Friday prayers with his family and several party members at his mother’s funeral prayers in London on Friday.
The prayer was held at the Central Mosque in London. Alternatively, it is known as the Regent’s Park Mosque. The number of participants had to be limited to 30 under the UK’s Corona virus guideline.
Begum Shamim Akhtar died in London on November 22 at the age of 89. She had a severe chest infection and was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Her condition worsened and she could not regain her health due to old age.
The deceased was being treated at a London hospital and his body was earlier kept in the Avonfield Apartments where she was staying with Nawaz Sharif.
