IDAHO FALLS — A small apartment complex suffered major damage after a fire broke out Wednesday evening at the corner of Lomax Street and North Higbee Avenue.
Multiple 911 calls were made to the emergency dispatchers around 9:13 p.m. Callers reported visible flames coming from the first floor of the building. The occupants were able to get out of the building safely.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered a blaze on the ground level of the two-story residence, comprised of three separate apartments, according to a news release from the Idaho Falls Fire Department.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, starting in the kitchen of the ground-floor apartment.
While the fire was contained to a single apartment, the entire building suffered varying degrees of damage. The ground-floor apartment sustained the most significant fire damage.
An eyewitness, Alex Hader, described the toll on residents living on each floor. One floor was home to a young couple.
“The young couple that lived there lost almost everything,” Hader told EastIdahoNews.com.
