Hyderabad: Farmers on Sunday staged a protest against the government’s decision to import tomatoes and destroyed their ready-to-harvest crop.
As reported Geo TVThe Sindh Resettlement Board (SAB) said that the process of importing tomatoes from abroad has reduced the locally produced prices, which is detrimental to the farmers. The board said the federal government was notified of the situation a month and a half ago but did not stop the import process.
As imported tomatoes continued to supply the markets, local tomato prices fell sharply.
According to SAB, farmers are currently selling tomatoes at Rs 11-15 per kg, and prices are being further reduced to Rs 5 per kg.
