Northwestern upsets Penn State

Penn State was on the wrong side of one of the biggest upsets of the 2025 college football season a week ago when UCLA shocked the Nittany Lions as a 24.5-point underdog. It happened again on Saturday as Penn State fell to Northwestern on Saturday as a 20.5-point favorite at home. It marked the first time an FBS team lost consecutive games as an outright favorite of at least 20 points in the last 30 years.

The Wildcats secured their biggest upset win since defeating Notre Dame 17-15 in 1995 after closing as a 28-point underdog in that game.

Northwestern running back Caleb Komolafe scored on a 9-yard rushing touchdown with 4:51 remaining to give his team the lead back for good. On Penn State’s following possession, quarterback Drew Allar went down with an injury and he was carted to the locker room.

Kent State snaps brutal losing streak

FINAL: Kent State 42, UMass 6

Kent State’s long national nightmare is finally over. The Golden Flashes snapped the nation’s longest losing streak against FBS opponents in dominant fashion Saturday and advanced to 2-4 on the year with a big win against UMass, which remains winless in its first season back with the MAC. This is Kent State’s first win against an FBS program since Nov. 26, 2022. It’s also the program’s first conference win in that same span. The Flashes have also exceeded their win total from each of the last two seasons.

Tennessee locked in battle with Arkansas

Half: No. 12 Tennessee 17, Arkansas 17

There’s a track meet brewing in Knoxville. That shouldn’t be a surprise given the two teams involved, but stops have been few and far between so far between Tennessee and Arkansas. The Razorbacks, in their first game with Bobby Petrino as interim coach, are keeping up thanks to an effective rushing attack. Lead running back Mike Washington Jr. averaged 9.1 yards per carry while rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown over the first 30 minutes.

Tennessee also ran the ball well, but it got a lot of work done behind the arm of quarterback Joey Aguilar. He completed nine of his 14 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Arkansas and Tennessee combined for 508 yards of total offense in the first half, which is the third-most for an FBS game this season.

Haynes King dealing in Atlanta

HALF: Georgia Tech 21, Virginia Tech 7

Looking to push its unbeaten streak to six games to start the season, the Yellow Jackets are in cruise control against the Hokies behind a 13-of-15, 143-yard effort in the first half from quarterback Haynes King. King has a touchdown on the ground and one through the air, helping Georgia Tech jump out to a 15-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets were one of several unbeaten ACC teams in conference play coming into Week 7, joining Miami, Virginia, SMU and Duke.

Oregon, Indiana locked in heavyweight battle

Half: No. 7 Indiana 13, No. 3 Oregon 10

Eugene, Oregon is host to a College Football Playoff-caliber game Saturday afternoon. Oregon and Indiana are locked in a very physical battle between two teams that look like legitimate national powers. As the score may suggest, neither side has been able to get much going offensively, though Indiana did nail a 58-yard field goal late in the second quarter to take some momentum into halftime.

Oregon scored on back-to-back drives between the first and second quarters, but it also punted twice, got stopped on fourth down and missed a field goal near halftime. Indiana put points on the board on two of its first three drives but went quiet after that.

Despite the lack of points, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza are both playing very well. Neither threw more than six incompletions, both eclipsed 100 yards and Moore produced his team’s only touchdown on a 44-yard connection with Malik Benson.

Notre Dame ahead at halftime vs. NC State

HALF: No. 16 Notre Dame 10, NC State 7

No. 16 Notre Dame got off to a hot start against NC State on Saturday with a touchdown on its opening possession. The Fighting Irish capped a six-play, 58-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jeremiyah Love. Since then, Notre Dame hasn’t done much offensively. However, Notre Dame was able to end the half on a positive note with a field goal to take a 10-7 lead into the break.

Between that touchdown and field goal before the end of the half, Notre Dame punted twice, turned it over on downs once and quarterback CJ Carr threw an interception in the red zone.

Fourth-ranked Ole Miss avoids colossal upset

FINAL: No. 4 Ole Miss 24, Washington State 21

The Rebels needed a stop from their defense in the final minute to hold off the Cougars, who entered the contest as a 33-point underdog, to remain unbeaten. With Ole Miss trailing 14-10 midway through the third quarter, Rebels quarterback Trinidad Chambliss ran for a touchdown and threw for another — a 35-yarder to Cayden Lee — to help his team come out unscathed. Lane Kiffin avoided his ninth loss to an unranked opponent during his tenure at Ole Miss, a setback that would’ve took must of the luster off next week’s showdown at Georgia.

Florida State’s slide continues with third consecutive loss

FINAL: Pittsburgh 34, No. 25 Florida State 31

Florida State’s slide continued Saturday with a 34-31 loss to Pittsburgh, marking the Seminoles’ third straight defeat and another low point in what has become a stunning collapse since their season-opening upset of then-No. 8 Alabama. The Seminoles (3-3) have now dropped eight straight conference games — the longest such streak in program history — and are just 1-10 against ACC opponents over the past two seasons. Their lone conference win during that span came against California on Sept. 21, 2024.

Since starting 13-0 in 2023, Florida State has gone just 5-14 overall, a shocking downturn for a program that appeared to have returned to national prominence less than two years ago. Saturday’s loss also marked the Seminoles’ third 0-3 start in ACC play since 2009.

Florida State’s defense was overwhelmed by a Pittsburgh offense led by true freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel, who carved up the Seminoles for 321 yards yards and two touchdowns. Heintschel added 64 yards rushing and a score, accounting for most of the Panthers’ 476 total yards.

Once viewed as a rising contender under coach Mike Norvell, the Seminoles now face serious questions about their trajectory. The team that began 2023 unbeaten and confident has spiraled into one searching for answers — and its next conference win.

No. 8 Alabama hangs on against No. 14 Missouri

FINAL: No. 8 Alabama 27, No. 14 Missouri 24

The Crimson Tide have survived a major road test with a hard-fought win over the Tigers in Columbia. After Alabama took a 27-17 lead late in the fourth quarter, Missouri pushed to tie the game. The Tigers reached the end zone to cut the deficit to 27-24, but Tide came up with an interception after the Tigers regained possession in the final minute.

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson didn’t have his best day statistically, but he did make some huge throws when Alabama needed them most. His best play of the day came on a key fourth down in the fourth quarter when he dropped the ball in a bucket to Lotzeir Brooks down the sideline.

This preposterous pass kept the drive alive, and the Crimson Tide went on to score what would prove to be the winning touchdown.

Simpson finished his day with 200 yards and three touchdowns on 23 of 31 passing. Brooks was Alabama’s leading receiver with four receptions for 58 yards. The Missouri defense did a terrific job against Ryan Williams, who failed to record a catch, but Simpson was able to get the ball to his other playmakers.

With this win, Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer moves to 6-1 against AP-ranked teams in his tenure, which is the second-best record over that span. This is also the first time that the Crimson Tide have started 3-0 in SEC play with all three wins coming against AP-ranked teams.

Armed with Mark Cuban donations and Curt Cignetti’s brash approach, Indiana sets up for sustained success

A special season for Indiana ended on a sour note as it lost to Notre Dame 27-17 in the College Football Playoff first round to finish 11-2. Amid a hot start to the follow-up in the 2025 season, the No. 7 Hoosiers now travel to No. 3 Oregon to face the Ducks on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ Premium) and again put the notion of whether they can contend on the line.

Oregon under Phil Knight — affectionately called Uncle Phil — became the poster child for how to fund a football program into the national spotlight incrementally year over year. The Ducks are not a blue blood, they’re a new blood, and they’re the best bet to be the next first-time college football national champion. But as college football enters the revenue-sharing era, Indiana is an example of the next frontier — schools feeling the existential threat of where college sports is going and knowing that relevancy in football is the most important thing.

Alabama RB Jam Miller helped to the locker room after a big hit on the sideline

Alabama leads Missouri 27-17 with late in the fourth quarter, and they are trying to lock up their fifth win of the season without their star running back Jam Miller.

Miller left the game earlier in the fourth quarter after he picked up a fourth down conversion on a flip pass from Ty Simpson, but as he ran down the sideline he ducked his head and took a huge hit that left him down on the sideline, with trainers rushing over to give him immediate attention.

Miller was eventually helped to the locker room, walking slowly and with the assistance of the trainers after taking that shot to his head along the sideline.

Ole Miss scores a late TD to take a 10-7 lead into halftime against Washington State

With an early start in Oxford, most expected Washington State to be the team that would struggle to get up to speed in the first half, but instead it was Ole Miss that was sleepwalking through much of the first half. The Cougars went up 7-0 in the first quarter thanks to some trickery, and the Rebels’ offense that has dominated lesser competition this season struggled to get out of first gear.

Ole Miss got on the board with a field goal early in the second quarter, but didn’t take the lead until Trinidad Chambliss found Dae’Quan Wright in the end zone on 3rd and goal with 30 seconds left in the half.

That gave Ole Miss a 10-7 advantage, as the No. 4 team in the country looks to avoid a disastrous letdown performance before a trip to Athens next week to take on No. 10 Georgia.

Lane Kiffin will need to get his squad focused in the locker room at halftime, as any expectation that they’d cruise to a win and be able to start looking ahead to a big SEC showdown has gone out the window with a sloppy first 30 minutes of action.

Top-ranked Buckeyes cruising

Halftime: No. 1 Ohio State 20, No. 17 Illinois 3

The unbeaten Buckeyes cashed in on a pair of takeaways and lead the Illini at halftime in a matchup of nationally ranked teams. With a road win, Ohio State coach Ryan Day would improve to 50-0 during his tenure against Big Ten competition not named Michigan or Oregon.

The Illini’s first points came on a successful kick with 1:08 to play in the second quarter, ending a tempo-driven, two-minute drill that stalled inside the 5-yard line thanks to Ohio State’s strength at the line of scrimmage. Dating back to last season, Ohio State hasn’t allowed a rushing touchdown in 184 rush attempts, the longest active streak in FBS.

FSU takes 21-14 halftime lead over Pitt thanks to wild Castellanos TD

Florida State didn’t take its first lead of the first half until there were six seconds left on the clock in the second quarter, when Tommy Castellanos spun out of the pocket to avoid pressure and chucked a (probably ill-advised) prayer to the goal line, where it was somehow caught for a TD by Landen Thomas.

It’s just the second catch of the season for the tight end, who boxed out the Pitt DB and hauled in the heave from Castellanos to push into the end zone for the go-ahead score just before the half. Despite having the lead, there’s plenty for FSU to clean up in the second half, especially on defense, where they’ve seen Pitt move the ball almost at will.

Pitt’s freshman QB Mason Heintschel has had a rollercoaster day, at times looking like a star and other times looking very much like a freshman making his first road start — most notably on a pair of interceptions. The second one came on a poor pass to the end zone that thwarted a Pitt red zone visit and FSU turned into the Castellanos touchdown, flipping the score from a likely Panthers lead at the half to the Noles holding a seven-point advantage at the break.

Alabama leads entering halftime

Half: No. 8 Alabama 17, No. 14 Missouri 10

It feels like things could have gone a lot worse for Missouri in the first half. The Tigers’ offense cooled significantly after its high-octane first drive. They scored a touchdown on their first possession and then punted the ball three straight times, with two three-and-outs in that span. They didn’t even cross midfield again until late in the second quarter when they were able to cut the deficit back to one possession with a 35-yard field goal.

Alabama’s offense, on the other hand, scored on three of its four first-half drives. Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson continues to look like one of the best players in the nation, as he completed 10 of his 14 pass attempts for 89 yards and both of his team’s touchdowns. He also rushed for 16 yards on four carries while keeping the Tide ahead of the sticks.

UCLA goes up 17-7 at Michigan State after pulling off a fake punt to keep drive alive

For anyone wondering if last week’s shocking upset of Penn State was a mirage from UCLA, the Bruins are at it again in East Lansing as they lead Michigan State 17-7 early in the second quarter. Their most recent touchdown came on a short TD pass from Nico Iamaleava on a drive that was extended by a beautifully executed fake punt in their own territory.

That fake to the upback got UCLA across midfield and they picked apart the Spartans defense from there. The change to new playcaller Jerry Neuheisel continues to pay dividends,. He and Iamaleava seem totally in sync, and the Bruins offense suddenly has the juice they hoped when they shelled out for Nico in the transfer portal.

SMU trickery with behind-the-back pitch

Halloween isn’t for another three weeks, but SMU has some trickery up its sleeves against Stanford. Quarterback Kevin Jennings faked the handoff, then slickly flipped a behind-the-back pitch to tight end RJ Maryland for an 8-yard gain. The Mustangs eventually capitalized on the drive for a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Track meet in Columbia

Mid 1Q: No. 8 Alabama 7, No. 14 Missouri 7

Looks like defensive will be optional as Missouri hosts Alabama Saturday afternoon. So far, Faurot Field has seen two drives and two touchdowns. Missouri fired like a well-oiled machine on its game-opening possession. The Tigers marched 78 yards down the field in just 2:43 to score on a touchdown connection between quarterback Beau Pribula and tight end Brett Norfleet.

Alabama was a bit more methodical. The Crimson Tide took 11 plays and ate almost six minutes off of the clock before quarterback Ty Simpson hit running back Kevin Riley for a 6-yard touchdown. Alabama also converted the first third-down of the game, and a taunting call on Missouri helped keep the drive alive. Alabama is now 24 of 25 on its red zone possessions this season, an efficient mark that’s often key to a team’s success.

College Football Playoff race 2025: Oregon vs. Indiana, trio of SEC matchups highlight busy Week 7 slate

The 2025 college football season has nearly reached its midway point. That means every game has a tremendous impact on a team’s postseason hopes and all of the results will be under the microscope as the College Football Playoff selection committee starts to turn an eye towards its first set of rankings.

So it’s appropriate that Week 7 is loaded with big-time games. Six ranked teams will face off with one another as the action unfolds on Saturday.

Few are as important as No. 7 Indiana’s trip to No. 3 Oregon. Both the Hoosiers and the Ducks have already built impressive records, but the chance to beat a top-10 opponent in primetime is always hard to pass up.

Elsewhere, top-ranked Ohio State faces another tough road test as it travels to No. 17 Illinois and No. 8 Alabama will look to keep rolling against No. 14 Missouri

Ballad of Bobby Petrino: From infamy to interim, there’s hope for redemption in latest stint leading Arkansas

The beauty of second chances is that they free you from living in the past.

For Bobby Petrino, 13 years was plenty of time to contemplate what could have been at Arkansas. He knows he will forever be tied to the infamous motorcycle accident and affair with a subordinate that led to his firing in the spring of 2012, just months after the program’s most successful back-to-back seasons since the Hogs won 22 straight games and a national title between 1964 and 1965.

But now he has a second chance.

On Saturday, he steps back on the sideline as Arkansas’ interim head coach, bumped up from offensive coordinator in the wake of coach Sam Pittman’s firing two weeks ago. In a rare opportunity that can only happen in sports or a Hollywood script, the 64-year-old coach has the chance to prove himself again.

No. 25 Florida State shorthanded at receiver vs. Pittsburgh

Florida State will be without wide receivers Jayvan Boggs and Squirrel White, who are both listed as out on the pregame injury report, while starting tight end Randy Pittman Jr. is a game-time decision for Saturday’s matchup against Pittsburgh. Boggs and White have combined for nine receptions totaling 99 yards and a touchdown this season. Pittman is the Seminoles’ second-leading receiver, catching 11 passes for 73 yards and two scores, and adding another touchdown on the ground.

Missouri’s showdown with Alabama — 50 years in the making — gives Tigers chance to climb SEC hierarchy

Big games are now routine at Missouri, but this week’s showdown with Alabamacarries both historic weight and pressing urgency.

The Tigers haven’t won a top-15 showdown at home since 1976, when No. 12 Mizzou crushed No. 14 North Carolina 24-3. Forty-nine years without such a victory is staggering, but the scarcity of opportunities may be even more telling.

That drought ends Saturday, when No. 14 Missouri welcomes No. 8 Alabama in the first top-15 duel at Faurot Field in nearly half a century. History is on the line, and so is a breakthrough moment for coach Eli Drinkwitz’s tenure as head coach.

The Tigers have been superb since 2024, with a 25-5 record and 15 straight wins at home, tying for the second-best active streak in the country. But there’s one lingering issue: the lack of a marquee win.

College football schedule, games 2025: What to watch in Week 7, TV channels, streaming, Saturday kickoff times

Counting only the regular season, the 2025 college football campaign reaches its midway point this weekend as the calendar flips to Week 7. That means the results of games start to really matter, as we’re less than a month away from the first College Football Playoff rankings reveal.

It also means that most programs at this point are getting into the meet of their conference schedule. Week 7 promises to shift the national landscape, as there are three games featuring ranked opponents and several intriguing league clashes that could cause seismic change in the top 25.

Few games are bigger than No. 7 Indiana’s road trip to No. 3 Oregon. Elsewhere in the Big Ten, No. 17 Illinois hosts top-ranked Ohio State. The SEC is also home to a top-25 clash as No. 8 Alabama has to pack its bags to play at No. 14 Missouri.

There’s plenty beyond those headline acts for college football fans to keep an eye on.

College football Week 7 storylines: Oregon vs. Indiana for new No. 1? Billy Napier continues quest to save job

Almost every week after a particularly big game, we love to collectively pronounce the victor as the nation’s new top team.

We did it for Ohio State’s win over Texas. We did it for Oregon’s road win at Penn State. And Miami’s victory over in-state rival Florida State.

Let’s just get ahead of it this time: Whichever team emerges victorious out of the weekend’s best game between No. 3 Oregon and No. 7 Indiana on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET on CBS and streaming on Paramount+ Premium) should be the new No. 1 team in the country.
