Karachi (Staff Reporter) Karachi today (Thursday) is ready to host the expected by-election in its NA-249 constituency.
The total population of NA-249 is 782,776, of which only 339,591 or 43% are registered to vote. There are 216,056 male voters in the constituency while the number of female voters is 137,935.
About 30 candidates are running for the seat, including Muftah Ismail of the PML-N and former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered strict implementation of Corona Virus SOPs during NA-249 by-elections. Special staff will also be deployed for the implementation of these SOPs. Last month, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-elections in NA-249 following the resignation of PTI’s Faisal Wawda from the National Assembly seat, which he sought to get 35,344 votes in the 2018 general elections I got it later.
Meanwhile, PML-N leaders on Wednesday criticized the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for creating a tense atmosphere in NA-249 constituency and deploying its favorite polling staff at certain polling stations. He said that if any attempt was made to rig the by-elections, the results would not be good for Pakistan and Karachi.
Addressing a press conference at the Muslim League House, former prime minister and PML-N central leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the victory of his party’s candidate Muftah Ismail was certain. Shahid Khaqan said the PML-N feared widespread rigging in the by-elections, adding that creating a law and order situation could also delay the polling process. He said that it was the responsibility of the Sindh government to provide security to the voters and candidates and conduct the elections in a peaceful manner.
He said that PTI leader Faisal Wawda was elected from NA-249 and became the Federal Minister for Water but he could not bring water in this constituency. The PML-N leader said, “What can a minister do for the country when he cannot even bring water to his constituency.” Shahid Khaqan also demanded that the judiciary take notice of the statements of former DG FIA Bashir Memon about Prime Minister Imran Khan. The National Accountability Bureau has also registered cases against me. When I ask who the applicant is, no one answers.
