Boris is under pressure

LONDON: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced a growing scrutiny on Sunday following explosive allegations by his former chief aide Dominic Cummings earlier this week that he lacked competence and integrity.

Cummings, who resigned as his top adviser in December, used a personal blog on Friday to claim that Johnson had worked to renovate a publicly funded Downing Street flat. Tried to solicit possibly illegal donations.

He also claimed that the British leader had proposed to stop the internal investigation of the government leaks, as the culprit was identified as a close friend of Johnson’s fiance Kerry Symonds. Johnson’s office has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once. ۔

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said on Sunday that the allegations were “grossly disturbing” and assured her that all laws had been fully complied with. “This is the title that is being advertised and I don’t think it will help the people of the UK identify the important issues they care about,” he told Sky News.

But the allegations, after weeks of stories of alleged inappropriate lobbying and sloganeering against Johnson, his ministers and officials, are making headlines this weekend. Johnson’s condemnation includes some Conservatives, including former Attorney General Dominic Grave, a longtime critic, who has called it a “vacuum of integrity.”
