Arc System Works leak confirms Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge theory

Since the reveal of Nintendo Switch 2 last month and following the news about game-key cards, there’s been a claim regarding cartridges for the console. We’ve been hearing that unlike Switch 1, there aren’t many options when it comes to sizes. Nintendo Switch 1 offered developers and publishers various options including 8GB and 16GB. However, at least currently, it’s claimed that 64GB is pretty much the only option on Nintendo Switch 2.

It’s now looking like this may very well be true. Arc System Works appears to have been hit with an internal hack in which someone was able to steal tons of data. We don’t want to get into that too much, but the end result is that it’s brought along some Nintendo Switch 2 news.

As part of the Arc System Works hack, leaked information has come to light regarding Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge sizes (via necrolipe). The following was listed as formats for the system’s games:

  • [DL] Digital game only
  • [64GB] Game card with full game
  • [POTION] Codename for game-key card

The reason why we may be seeing so many game-key cards at this point is due to a lack of options. If developers and publishers essentially just have 64GB as their only option for a true physical release, they may feel that it’s simply too expensive.

The same Arc System Works hack may have also revealed that Nintendo Switch 2 was intended to launch in March. There’s less information about that so it’s tough to dive into it further.

Also, the hack may have brought us the news that Arc System Works is working on an exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 game (via X0X_Leak). However, the only details known thus far is that it has the codename Watari, tentatively targeted for a November 2025 launch, and is using Unreal Engine 5.4.
