Teams across Delta are hard at work to take care of customers and recover our operation following a major weather event at our Atlanta hub June 27. Thunderstorms developed over the evening, bringing rain, lightning, hail and hazardous wind. The storm caused an evacuation and temporary power loss at the ATL air traffic control tower. The hail led to required inspections for over 100 aircraft, which our teams completed by Saturday morning. We expect continued disruption this weekend as we recover safely and as quickly as possible.
Delta’s Chief Customer Experience Officer Erik Snell apologized for the disruption in the below message to customers:
We’re sorry for disruptions to your travel
You expect and deserve the industry-leading reliability and service that Delta people have long worked to deliver. That’s why, when we fall short, we work around the clock to make it right.
Severe weather in Atlanta on the evening of June 27 brought intense thunderstorms, hail, windshear and reports of microburst winds — causing significant disruption to Delta’s largest hub where around 900 of our flights flow each day. The storm caused hundreds of cancellations, diversions and delays across our entire system as well as an evacuation and temporary power loss at the ATL air traffic control tower. More than 100 Delta aircraft required inspection due to hail, and we anticipate several hundred more cancellations this weekend as we work to safely recover.
On behalf of Delta’s 100,000 people who are working to restore our operation to its hallmark reliability, I am sorry for the inconvenience and uncertainty this event has caused. We sincerely appreciate your patience as we restore operations.
By early this morning, our world-class maintenance team had already returned many aircraft to service after thorough overnight inspections. Our Operations teams are actively getting crews back on schedule, while our pilots, flight attendants, airport teams, reservations specialists and volunteers from our headquarters are going above and beyond to care for you wherever you are in your journey.
If your travel is affected, please continue to consult the Fly Delta app and consider it your travel companion for the latest updates and flexible booking options. Delta.com is another reliable resource for the latest flight information. If you incurred expenses related to this disruption, please submit them through our expense reimbursement form.
Delta people are doing everything we can to get you where you need to be – safely and as quickly as possible. We appreciate you trusting Delta with your travel and remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting you through this disruption.
