The main event of today’s (Sat., June 28, 2025) WWE Night of Champions premium live event at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia featured two old friends renewing a rivalry from long ago — CM Punk sitting cross legged in the ring awaiting John Cena so they could fight for the WWE championship once more.
Hey, the retirement tour is nearly over. They had to get this in while they still could.
Much has changed since they had those classics all those years ago, namely their age and respective physical abilities. So how would they put this one together to come anywhere close to what they did before?
They worked slow to start, and told the story that they know each other so well they were prepared for everything. That meant having taken all the old moves enough times to fight out of them.
Like Punk kicking out of not one, not two, but three separate Attitude Adjustments.
What was interesting was when Cena got frustrated after the third, went to use the WWE title, and when the fans pleaded with him not to he actually listened.
Punk hit him with a GTS for his troubles but he kicked out. They did a referee bump shortly after all this, and Punk hit another GTS that would have given him the win.
You know, if the ref was around.
The visual pin will have to do.
While Punk was begging for a referee to come out, his newer nemesis, Seth Rollins, hit the scene with his crew, Money in the Bank briefcase in hand. Would this be it?
When Rollins called for a referee, Cena knocked Charles Robinson over on his way into the ring. He wasn’t having any of that, taking Seth out and setting up a chaotic finish where multiple wrestlers got involved from there, from Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed to Penta and Sami Zayn.
By the time all was said and done, only Punk and Cena remained. They shook hands, seemingly sharing a moment, but Cena looked at the camera and went for the low blow. Punk was ready for it but he couldn’t do anything more because Rollins was right there to lay him out with the briefcase and a Stomp.
Cena took advantage, dumping Rollins out and pinning Punk off that.
