Red Sox Star Alex Bregman Opens Up About ‘Severe’ Injury

What was hoped to be a minor injury turned out to be devastating for the Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman.

“Yeah, pretty severe right quad strain,” Bregman admitted to reporters following Boston’s extra-innings win Saturday afternoon over the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park, as seen on NESN’s postgame coverage. “Pretty similar to (the 2021 injury).”

Bregman admitted that he wasn’t expecting the results of the MRI, considering how he felt when he left Friday’s game early after rounding first base in the fifth inning.

“Surprised me a lot,” he said. “But, it is what it is. I’ll try and take it day by day and crush rehab.”

While playing for the Houston Astros in the 2021 season, Bregman played just 91 games after sustaining a left quad injury. He was hoping to avoid the same type of injury in his right quad.

“I felt better yesterday when I got hurt. Then last night I couldn’t really fall asleep, so I started to hurt pretty good,” he explained. “Then, after the MRI, I found out it was pretty severely strained, and now it’s time to focus on rehab. Neither of (the injuries) really felt that good.”

After the Red Sox walked off with a 6-5 10th inning win in Game 1 of a doubleheader with the Orioles, Boston placed Bregman on the 10-day injured list and recalled prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A Worcester. The club also transferred injured first baseman Triston Casas to the 60-day IL.

Bregman missed 10 weeks in 2021. He tried not to put a timetable on how long he would be sidelined.

“There’s nothing else to do besides try and get better every single day and focus on the rehab and dominate that. And try and stack as many good days as possible and get back as soon as you can,” he said. “It’s just day to day, there’s no timetable for it. So, just focus on the next day.”
