6A/5A: Idaho Fall’s Jaycee Jensen, Century’s Ethan Hansen, Blackfoot’s Lauren Christiansen earn state titles on Day 1


MERIDIAN — Day 1 of the 6A/5A track and field state championships saw three
area champions crowned as Idaho Falls’ Jaycee Jensen captured the 5A girls 3,200 title in a personal best time of 11:00.32, holding of Century’s Hailey Jackson, who also ran a personal best in 11:02.37.

The boys 3,200 in 5A had a distinct eastern Idaho theme as Century’s Ethan Hansen held off Wood River’s Matt Wilde at the finish line to win the title in a PR time of 9:32.46 with Wilde crossing in 9:32.67.

Fellow Century runner Ammon Bitton was third with Skyline teammates Alexander Renna and Davis Robert finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Bonneville’s Giryan Jones finished sixth.

Blackfoot’s Lauren Christiansen won the state title in the 5A girls triple jump with a mark of 36-6.0.

Pocatello’s Adrie Johnson was right behind at 35-9.75.

Pocatello’s Tessa Hargraves also medaled, placing fourth and Century’s Aaja Martin was eighth.

Wrapping up a busy Friday at the 6A/5A meet:

Track events

Brynlee Gwilliam of Madison set a personal best of 10:57.79 to finish third in the 6A girls 3,200.

Pocatello’s Katie Boyle finished seventh in the 5A 3,200. Her 11:48.26 was a new personal record.

Field events

It was another big day for the Rigby girls pole vault contingent as Lizzy Poston finished second in the 6A field with a PR of 11-6.

Freshman Gracie West and sophomore Kaylei Kelley placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with each clearing 11-0. The 11-0 mark was a PR for Kelley.

The Trojans also added two medals in the boys 6A shot put, with Cesar Leon-Espinoza setting a PR toss of 50-5.50 to place fourth and junior Brayden Maughan hitting 50-00.00 to place fifth.

Blackfoot senior Dawandey Dillus earned second in the 5A boys discus with a toss of 145-06. Pocatello’s Gavin Schiffman also medaled in the event, finishing fifth.

Preston’s D’Carreih-Jo Lumpkin was the top east Idaho finisher in the high jump, clearing 6-2 to place fourth. Shelley’s Tanner Lunt and Landen Smith tied for sixth at 5-10 while Hillcrest’s Trezden Thomson and Blackfoot’s Porter Hirshi tied for eighth at 5-10.

Rigby’s Brinley Bybee and Thunder Ridge’s Vennis Bell were second and third in the 6A girls long jump at 17-6.25 and 17-3.75.

Rigby’s boys pole vaulters earned three medals as Garrett Merwin cleared 15-6 to finish second in 6A, while Jarom Christensen placed fourth and Kade Scott was fifth.

Three east Idaho girls made the podium in the 6A shot put. Rigby’s Bailey Clements finished third and Madison’s Brielle Nite was fourth. Highland’s Lauryn Bringhurst was sixth.

Blackfoot’s Eva Grimm finished second in the 5A discus with a mark of 131-07. Ellie Nelson of Preston placed fourth.

It was a tight competiton in the girls 5A high jump with Hillcrest senior Leah Pebley and Moscow’s Mattea Nuhn each clearing 5-6, but Nuhn won the title on attempts.

Skyline’s Caliyah Wagner finished fourth, and Hillcrest’s Ashley Leikam and Pocatello’s Adrie Johnson tied for sixth at 5-2.

Madison’s Bryce Dredge finished second in the 6A boys long jump at 22-07.5 and Radley Nebeker of Thunder Ridge was sixth at 21-02.75

Blackfoot’s Boedy Callister was second in the 5A triple jump with a mark of 43-00.50, with Shelley’s Kyle Davis placing fourth iwth a mark of 42-07.25.
