LIGHTING UP THE SKY — Videos shared online over the weekend of a bright light soaring across the sky got the attention of Idahoans and Utahans.

The National Weather Service in Pocatello, Idaho, shared on its Facebook page a dashcam video taken May 3, 2025. They credited the video to Jared Tate in Idaho Falls.

The footage shows a bright light in the sky that appears out of nowhere. It begins moving quickly across the sky in a downward direction then disappears. The NWS said the video is of a meteor.

“Meteors and fireballs are caused by space rocks (meteoroids) entering Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, heating up from friction and glowing, sometimes brightly enough to create a fireball,” the Facebook caption reads.

Commenters on the video said they also saw a meteor that same night — whether it was the same meteor or not is not clear — in places such as Tetonia, near Birch Creek, Blackfoot and Hailey.

It’s not certain where the meteor landed that Tate’s dashcam recorded but residents in Ogden, Utah, were speculating that night that a meteorite struck there.

KUTV said a “suspected meteorite” was seen “plunging toward Weber County” with reports starting around 9:30 p.m. on May 3, 2025.

An Ogden woman said she saw a bright flash in the sky, followed by an echoing sound and rising smoke, the news outlet explained. The woman shared a photo of what she described to be a “plume of green smoke near 12th Street and Harrison Boulevard.”

NASA reported the annual Eta Aquarids meteor shower would be active from April 20 to May 21, 2025, with “peak night” being May 5 to May 6. NASA said these meteors are known for their high speed and would be viewable in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
