Danny Villagran knows his way around Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center (EIRMC). As a patient care tech (PCT) in the float pool since 2017, he helps out “wherever they need me” doing “a little of everything” to provide compassionate care for patients.
In addition to being great at what they do, float pool techs need to be quick learners who can adapt to the unique needs of each department they step into. Danny is all these things and more, which is why he is a recipient of EIRMC’s Caregivers of Tomorrow Scholarship.
Danny received more than $15,000 — enough to cover his entire tuition costs for College of Eastern Idaho’s (CEI) nursing school. With five kids 13 and younger, a full-time job and now a school workload, Danny is grateful for the generous award.
“I’ve talked with so many people who have gone to nursing school and come out with tens of thousands of dollars of debt,” Danny says. “I feel so blessed that I’m not going to have to pay back a huge debt. I’m so thankful because we can use our money for other things.”
Right place, right time
Danny’s route to receiving his award was somewhat circuitous. Instead of applying for the scholarship, which he didn’t know about, it was awarded to him by the Caregivers of Tomorrow Committee after they became aware of his tenure at EIRMC and his goal to further his education in nursing.
It all started early one morning as Danny was leaving through the ER following his night shift. Coming in through the ER was Sabrina Braun, chief nursing executive for HCA Mountain Division, and her team. They were unsure where to find the administration offices and Danny offered to take them. Unaware of who he was escorting, he struck up a friendly conversation and impressed the group with his actions and demeanor.
The following day, Braun visited the College of Eastern Idaho with Brandi Allred, EIRMC’s chief nursing officer. During the tour, they made a stop at the CEI nursing skills lab, where Danny was attending class. Noticing his EIRMC jacket, Braun then recognized him as the one who had escorted her team through the hospital. Danny shared that he had started the nursing program the week before and that he was looking forward to a nursing career at EIRMC.
The Caregivers of Tomorrow Committee, after due diligence and discussion, surprised Danny with the scholarship.
“I was not expecting that at all,” Danny says. “I was absolutely surprised and shocked. It totally blew my mind. I want to thank the committee for the opportunity, especially since I’m from an immigrant family. I feel so blessed.”
Childhood dream fulfilled
Most adults aren’t doing the jobs that they aspired to as kids. But Danny is well on his way.
“In all those roleplay games you do as a kid, I was always the medic,” Danny says. “I always wanted to be a first responder, but it wasn’t meant to be. But now I think being in healthcare — being a nurse — is better. Helping my colleagues and our patients makes me feel good. Helping people makes me happy and want to come to work, even when it’s stressful.”
Danny is on track to finish his program in December 2026 and can see himself being part of the EIRMC family for a long time.
“Getting my nursing degree is going to be awesome because I’ve been a PCT for so long. I’m excited. I’m ready,” he says. “I see myself staying at EIRMC in the long term. My family is here. This is a really good place to live and work. It felt like having family care for my daughter when she was in the neonatal intensive care unit. EIRMC has been really good to me.”
