KOTOR Remake Dev Screenshots Surface

We’ve had very few chances to see the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which is reasonable given the rocky development the title has undergone. Our first glimpse was the 2021 reveal trailer, and our second was fairly recent, with a piece of concept art we discovered. Unfortunately, both belonged to the version developed by Aspyr that ended up being cancelled.

The remake is currently in the hands of Saber Interactive, and it still doesn’t look like we’ll be hearing any news about that version anytime soon. But on the bright side, we’ve continued to uncover more development material from that first, cancelled version, this time including a look at props, weapons, and even a capture of a (really early) playable prototype.

New Look at Aspyr’s Version of the KOTOR Remake

The following images were shared in the portfolio of a former Aspyr artist, and they primarily show weapons and props that were being developed for that version of the game.

According to the artist, some of these props belonged to an introductory level. It is also mentioned that the weapons were being designed with a modular weapon system in mind, allowing players to upgrade guns by swapping out parts. We get a clear example of this modular system in an image featuring a blaster rifle.

Props aside, the most notable image in the gallery is the one showing a third-person view prototype. It features the player character in a textureless test environment while holding a Vibroblade, a weapon present in the original title, and which we can also get a better look at in two other images. At the top of this screenshot, we can see several debug menu buttons used to test animations and objects, such as pistols and lightsabers.

Another interesting detail is located in a corner of the capture, where we can see an option that appears to be for testing companion functionality, as evidenced by the two icons for Mission Vao, a companion character familiar to players of the original KOTOR.

While we cannot pinpoint the exact date this material was created, it may come from a version close to the project’s cancellation. The artist worked with Aspyr until 2022, the same year Bloomberg reported that development was indefinitely halted, making it possible that these assets represent some of the final work done on that iteration of the remake.

Though these images may not be overtly revealing, they do give us a clear idea of the level of detail and ambition Aspyr had planned to implement in the game. Now, all that’s left is to wait and see what kind of approach Saber Interactive will take with the project, and, hopefully, that it finally makes it to release.
