FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The pageantry, practice rounds, prognosticating and performative gestures were officially put in the rear-view window early Friday when the 2025 Ryder Cup got underway at Bethpage Black with Europe jumping out to a commanding — and somewhat surprising — 3-1 lead. The United States is looking to regain the trophy and prevent Europe from becoming the first team to win a road Ryder Cup in 13 years. While the Americans entered the event as slim favorites, the odds have flipped with Europe now standing as a -165 favorite to retain the trophy and -110 favorite to win outright.
The Americans were decimated in foursomes with their top three pairings Friday all falling to the Europeans for the first time stateside in Ryder Cup history. Bryson DeChambeau & Justin Thomas won the opening hole, sending the Long Island crowd into a frenzy, only to not capture another before the match ended on the 15th. In fact, across the three matches Europe won, they completely dominated, claiming 18 holes compared to just four for the United States. The devastation is so severe that U.S. captain Keegan Bradley has no choice but to make significant changes to his strategy for Friday four-ball and perhaps the rest of the Ryder Cup.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is directing the American effort, while the golfers whom CBS Sports has power ranked 2-4 in the field all come from Europe: Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood. The U.S. may be a bit deeper from top to bottom, but its 12-man roster also features four rookies compared to just one suiting up for Europe.
Four-ball (best ball) action will be played in the afternoon with different pairings being chosen by Bradley and European captain Luke Donald, so there will be plenty of golf to follow through the evening.
