SHELLEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A suspect is dead, accused of trying to steal a 4-wheeler from a home near Shelley, just south of Idaho Falls.
Late Tuesday night, Bingham County Deputies were dispatched to the intersection of 1100 E. and 1300 N. for a report of shots fired, according to a release by the Bingham County and Bonneville Sheriff’s Office.
“The reporting party advised a homeowner encountered a suspect on their property attempting to take a 4-wheeler,” stated the release. “During the encounter shots were fired injuring both the homeowner and suspect who then fled on foot.”
Deputies arrived on the scene and, with the help of local law enforcement, began searching the area for the suspect. First responders were also called and took the homeowner to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for treatment after being shot. They are expected to recover.
“During the search, Bingham and Bonneville County Deputies located the suspect in a field next to the residence and shots were fired by Deputies from both agencies,” according to the release. “Deputies immediately began life saving measures, however the suspect died at the scene.”
No law enforcement officers were injured.
Bingham County Sheriff Jeff Gardner requested the East Idaho Critical Incident Team handle the investigation. The sheriff’s office stated that it will release further information as the investigation unfolds.
