Boston Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler is reportedly being removed from the starting rotation.
The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham first reported the news on Friday.
“Buehler is coming out of the rotation,” Abraham posted on Bluesky.
Friday’s news comes after Red Sox manager Alex Cora was recently noncommittal when asked if Buehler would start on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles. Buehler was in line to take the bump for Monday’s series opener, following Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello, Garrett Crochet and Dustin May in the current four-game series against the New York Yankees.

Buehler signed a one-year, $21.05 million contract with the Red Sox in December and has mostly struggled during the 2025 season.
The two-time All-Star enters Friday at 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and just 82 strikeouts against 54 walks in 22 starts (110 innings pitched).
Buehler allowed two runs on four hits, four strikeouts and four walks in four innings against the Orioles on Wednesday during his last outing. Buehler’s lack of control has hindered his ability to work deep into games, as he’s worked six or more innings in six of his last 13 appearances.

It isn’t clear who will take 31-year-old’s spot in the rotation, but the team could have multiple options.
Kyle Harrison has impressed recently in Triple-A and last pitched on Tuesday. The 24-year-old southpaw was acquired from the San Francisco Giants in June as a part of the blockbuster trade that sent Rafael Devers to the Bay Area.
It’s been reported that top pitching prospect Payton Tolle is likely to crack the majors this season as well. Tolle, however, is slated to start for the Worcester Red Sox on Friday, so he wouldn’t be a candidate for Monday’s game.
