AUGUSTA, Ga. — Two heavyweights contenders entered the final round of the 2025 Masters with history on their minds and 18 holes in their sights. A title showdown set for Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club featuring Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau is how the final round began, but at the turn, it is McIlroy who has pulled in front of the field with his first green jacket and an opportunity to become the sixth career grand slam winner firmly in his grasp.
McIlroy held the sixth 54-hole lead of his major championship career entering Sunday’s fourth round. He is aiming to avenge not only his loss DeChambeau last summer but a devastating showing 14 years ago when he similarly held a 54-hole lead at the 2011 Masters only to shoot the worst round of his career at ANGC (80) and lose the tournament by four strokes. McIlroy has gone 4-0 with 54-hole leads at major championships since, though he has not held one since the 2014 PGA Championship (his last major win). A victory for Rory would not only net him a green jacket but a place in history as he would become the first European golfer and first overall since Tiger Woods to complete the career grand slam.
It is now McIlroy vs. McIlroy and McIlroy vs. Augusta National — his two greatest adversaries — through the 72nd hole of this tournament. Golf history is on the line, as is a $2.1 winner’s check out of a record 2025 Masters purse featuring more prize money than has ever been handed out by ANGC.
